How these programs fit together

Intestinal failure is the broader condition in which the intestine cannot absorb enough nutrients, fluids, or electrolytes without medical support. Short bowel syndrome is one common cause. Intestinal rehabilitation is the treatment approach that helps the remaining intestine work as well as it can, and intestinal transplant is an advanced option when other treatment can no longer keep a patient safe and healthy.

Not every patient needs every program. Our team evaluates each patient's needs and coordinates the appropriate care with their existing gastroenterologist, surgeon, and hospital team.

Refer a patient or ask a question

Hospitals, LTACHs, gastroenterologists, and surgeons across northern California are encouraged to refer early, before the next admission. Patients and families are welcome to contact us with questions.
